Dropping The Ball

As everyday observers of the Diamondbacks, we pride ourselves on staying on Greenmets_1 top of team developments, so it is with considerable chagrin that we learned over supper tonight that Shawn Green is no longer with the club.

It turns out Shawn was traded a month ago to the New York Mets in exchange for a small patch of brown liquid, in what's being heralded by both teams as a "win-win".

We had assumed Shawn was still  "around", until our dinner companion patiently documented Green's monthlong absence from the Arizona lineup with thirty compelling boxscores to the contrary.

Greenfirst For weeks, Diamondhacks figured an array of fine running outfield catches was evidence that the lumbering veteran finally "got it", however sober reinspection reveals that the only rightfielder who's got balls is Carlos Quentin.

We apologize to our reader(s) for taking so long to recognize this important story and resolve not to drop any more balls like this in our back yard.

Here's something for your Fire Bob Melvin file.

I just saw Batista strike out looking to end the inning with Stephen Drew on third. Vin Scully noted that the D'Backs had nothing to lose by trying a squeeze with Batista, who is a weak hitter, but a good bunter. The score is 5-3, which is not exactly so big a lead as to throw away a chance at a run.

Are you sure that the patch of brown liquid is not what the DBacks got in the Shawn Green trade, but rather has been managing the D'Backs for a while and was signed to a contract extension?

Life, Baseball & a guy the D'Backs keep stranding on base.

And Batista closes out the AZ 7th by striking out for the 4th time tonight, this time with runners on first and second. They did get one run, so it's AZ 6 LA 3, but that's hardly a rally.

I saw the Mets clincher and while the other guys where practically out of their skins with joy, what little they showed of Green made me think of your entry titled "No discernible reaction from Green."

If you examine the clincher tape, frame by frame, at one point Green starts to raise his left eyebrow - so it's clear he could barely contain himself.

I dont think Miggy's much of a bunter, but not having him lay one down may've been a missed opportunity. I loved when Melvin brought Counsell in to "pinch-steal", alertly hopping to 3rd on Kent's bobble, forcing the infield in, over which CoJack dunked an RBI single.

You rarely see a sequence like that where the Dbacks do 3 things right in a row: forcing the issue, taking advantage of a small mistake, and hitting away from the defensive alignment.

Too little, too late - but twas a thing of beauty.
